Evergreen engineering content, not today’s news. Primary sources checked 21 October 2026. The checklist is our engineering recommendation, not a verified factory procedure or a customer case.
A BOM line that says “10 µF, X7R” identifies a nominal component value. It does not tell the whole story of the capacitance available on a powered board. For an industrial sensor, robot controller or edge-AI product, that distinction belongs in the design-to-manufacturing handover, before an apparently equivalent capacitor is approved.
Start with the operating condition
High-permittivity Class II multilayer ceramic capacitors, including X5R and X7R types, can provide less effective capacitance when a DC voltage is applied. The amount depends on the particular component and conditions. This should not be generalized to every ceramic dielectric: C0G has different bias behavior. Murata explains the distinction and recommends assessing suitability under actual operating conditions. Murata 1
X5R and X7R describe temperature characteristics. They do not, by themselves, promise that capacitance remains within the temperature-code limits after all voltage, tolerance and other effects are included. Treat the dielectric code as one selection parameter, not as the complete electrical specification. Murata 1, TDK 4
Why this matters to the build
TI’s discussion of LDO output capacitors illustrates why the circuit needs an appropriate effective capacitance, rather than a nominal number alone. The selected regulator’s requirements still govern; a reduction in capacitance does not automatically mean every circuit becomes unstable. TI 3
The manufacturing implication is an engineering conclusion: purchasing and assembly records should preserve the component choice on which the circuit was validated. A replacement that fits the pads and matches the headline value still needs the design owner’s approval. The following checklist is our proposed handover method, not a claim that PCBDOG has measured a particular capacitor or already validated your design.
1. Specify the exact part and its job
Identify the manufacturer and full part number for critical capacitors. Alongside the BOM reference, record the circuit role, such as regulator output filtering or a sensitive supply rail. Give the design reviewer the relevant voltage range, temperature range and required capacitance window from the circuit design.
Avoid a note that simply says “any equivalent 10 µF.” A clear critical-component note lets sourcing recognize which changes require engineering review without treating every passive component as equally sensitive. Keep any approved alternatives explicit and revision-controlled.
2. Compare data under matching conditions
Obtain the manufacturer’s characteristics for each proposed part. Murata’s SimSurfing guidance describes comparing part numbers and displaying data with changed measurement conditions, including temperature and AC measurement voltage.Murata 2
Save the source, part number, operating point and curve conditions with the review. Include frequency and AC amplitude where applicable. Do not place two plots side by side without checking whether their settings match. Also distinguish typical characterization from guaranteed limits. Where the available data cannot establish the required margin, ask the component manufacturer or qualify the choice through an agreed engineering evaluation.
There is no universal retained-capacitance percentage for all X7R parts. A higher voltage rating or larger package should not be treated as proof that a substitute meets the requirement. Use the actual candidate’s data rather than a blanket rule.
3. Separate component checks from product acceptance
A capacitance reading taken without DC bias describes that measurement condition. It does not establish the available capacitance at the powered operating point. Equally, a single biased measurement is not a complete regulator or product-validation result. This follows from the condition-dependent behavior documented by the manufacturers. Murata 1, Murata 2
For production discussions, define which checks are component acceptance, which belong to design qualification and which are required on assembled units. Agree on the test conditions, limits, sampling and ownership. Do not assume a routine visual inspection or generic power-on check covers a particular electrical margin.
4. Close the change loop
When an alternative is approved, update the controlled BOM and approved-parts record before the next build. Preserve the reason for approval and the evidence used. If stock availability triggers another substitution, reopen that decision rather than copying an earlier approval to an unrelated part.
This is especially useful when a prototype moves to repeat production: the assembly team should receive a released component choice, not have to infer what the designer intended from a nominal value.
Bring the requirement into the PCBA enquiry
For your next PCB/PCBA project, share the board files, BOM revision, quantities, approved alternatives and any critical capacitor requirements with PCBDOG. Discuss sourcing and assembly requirements together with the agreed test scope. Specialized bias characterization or power-integrity validation requires project-specific confirmation; it is not implied by general PCB/PCBA manufacturing services.
The practical goal is a clearer handover between design, sourcing and the build. Before approving the next alternative, ask: what capacitance does this exact part provide under the conditions our circuit actually uses?
